MINTAKA MISSING

Mintaka went missing on 23rd October 2011 from fields near Leonard Stanley, Gloucestershire.

While walking back the car, she bolted for an unknown reason. She was spotted by the farmers son back at the car, but was not there when we returned no more than 5 mins after she disappeared. There have been no sighting of Mintaka since she went missing.
We believe someone has got her and keeping quiet.

Please keep a look out for Mintaka, whatever part of the country you are from.

On Sunday 26th September, Sue of Deertrackers took part in a charity Dragon Boat race in aid of Animals Asia. The race was held at the historic dockyard in Bristol and the weather could not have been worse.....it rained for the most part of the day! There were about 18 teams taking part, raising money for various charities. A good day was had by all those who took part with fund raised hoping to be in excess of £2000 our charity.

Congratulations to Deertrackers Ulka (Nelly) who is now an offically approved tracking hound in Norway.

On the weekend of 16-17th July the NSHK held a weekend of testing and competition. On the Saturday, 10 Bavarians were entered into the blood tracking test. Nelly completed this precisely and finished in 2nd place.
On the Sunday a competitiion called 'Bruksspor' was held. This involves a 20hr track laid with cleaves but with only blood at the beginning and the end of the track. A shot is also fired at the end of the track for steadiness. 12 hounds were entered for the Bruksspor and Nelly placed 1st with a score of 8 points out of a possible of 9 points. Nelly and Anna have also been asked to be reserve for the Norwegian team in a Bruksspor competition held in Sweden in August.

Roe Buck Season So Far

The Deertrackers hounds have been out and about regularly this season. The season has produced more bucks than predicted with the occasional muntjac, but on the whole the bucks have been of poor quality going by their body weight probably through the harsh winter of 10/11. This has been Reggie’s and Freya’s first proper season accompanying us hunting Roe bucks. Both hounds are behaving well and tracking freshly shot deer and reporting found deer. They are also still regularly being worked on older/longer laid blood trails.
Mintaka has been out as usual, giving us a welcome break from having eager pups with us. It is nice to have a fully accomplished hound at heel. One memorable occasion was when Mintaka was put on the track of a gut shot roe buck; she quickly found the buck and was allowed to hunt free as the buck still had plenty of life in him. She hunted the buck through a cover eventually holding him at bay, yes, roe will hold at bay! When the rifle approached the buck was standing his ground and charging Mintaka but Mintaka was still comfortable holding him at bay not giving him a chance to make off again before he could be humanely shot.
The fox control has been given a break, letting vixens rear their cubs in peace except where the foxes are doing untold damage.

World Dog Show

On Friday 8th July 2011, Deertrackers made the journey over to France to attend the World Dog Show that was being held at Parc d’Exposition Paris Nord Villepinte outside Paris. The French Championship show was running in parallel with the World Dog show at the same venue to complicate things. We didn't take any of the hounds with us as was not sure what to expect and unfamiliar with how shows under the FCI work.

The venue was a big exhibition complex similar to the NEC with the show taking up 2 of the largest halls. Across the two halls were 90 exhibition rings, a discover dogs area, obedience ring, activities ring, main exhibition ring and the usual trade stands. One thing that stood out was how proud the French were of their hunting heritage. There was an area dedicated to stands exhibiting hunting and shooting societies and 20+ kennels exhibiting various packs of hunting hound. Handlers of the majority of the hound breeds and some of the lesser known gundog breeds exhibited their hounds in traditional hunting dress.

Bavarians were being judged at the French Championship Show on the Saturday by Bernard Rousett and drew a small entry of 6 hounds. Ch Cheivo Sfora Nemroda won Best in Breed.

Bavarians were judged at the World Dog Show on the Sunday by Andrzej Mania and drew a bigger entry of 18 hounds. Most of the hound’s handlers originated from Poland with a couple of hounds from Holland, UK and France. Ch Chievo Sfora Nemroda again won the Breed and CACIB with Locus Sfora Nemroda winning the CAC.

Overall in our opinion the hounds being exhibited were not of overly high quality and handlers were fairly lax in comparison to here in the UK in terms of standing their hounds for examination. It was also sad to see that one of the hounds bite the Judge upon examination and be dismissed from the ring. This hound was one from the UK but the owners are not part of the Breed Society.

While at the show we also took time to look at some other breeds we do not have here in the UK such as the Poitevin, Basset Artesien Normand and Braque Bourbonnais to name a few. We also spent time on the Sunday watching the Small Munsterlanders and speaking to exhibitors about the breed. It is amazing the breed has not become more popular in the UK given its size and versatility for the field. A SM also got shortlisted in Group 7 on the Saturday at the French Championship.

Overall we enjoyed our time in France watching Bavarians, Small Munsters and the seeing breeds we do not have in the UK, the only downside was the expense of the country. Everything seemed to be about 3 times more expensive than what you would pay in the UK.

The WDS is being held in Salzburg in 2012 and it would be nice to enter some Deertrackers dogs for exhibition under judges who know what Bavarians are and what they were bred to do.

Normally I wouldn't put show critiques on the blog, but the judge (Mr Frank Kane) is a well respected international judge in hounds.

PD 1 Deertrackers Ulbrecht, 11 months Bavarian Mountain Hound of good size and proportions, good head, eye & ears. Needs to develop in chest. Sound.

PB 1 Deertrackers Uschi of Chainama, 11 months Bavarian, in superb condition, well constructed & moved well. Just a fraction long for perfect balance but scored in chest. RBB
2 Deertrackers Ula, 11 months. Prefered her balance but not quite as finished in chest and not as firm in topline. I liked her type & balance & very sound movement. With maturity can do well.

LBGA Blood Tracking Test - 4/6/2011

On Saturday 4th of June Deertrackers Ula & Deertrackers Ulbrecht made the journey to Teviothead on the Scottish borders to take part in the Lothian & Borders Gundog Association Blood Tracking Test. The judge for the day was Christian Harbo of Denmark with the test leader being Niels Jorgen Christiansen of Denmark. Christian Harbo is a recognised Schweiss Judge in Denmark & has judged hundreds of dogs in tests, if not thousands. It was good to have the opportunity to have an experienced specialist judge assess the hounds.
The track was 400m using 100ml of deer blood and laid using track shoes, 3hours of age. 6 dogs were entered in all. 4 BMH’s and 2 GWP’s.
Both Deertrackers Ula & Ulbrecht passed the test and were awarded grade 1.
It was a most enjoyable day, thanks goes to Chris Gray & Jackie Hay and their team of helpers for arranging the day.

Nelly (Deertrackers Ulka) had her first conformation show on the weekend of the 21/5/2011. She was marked as Excellent by the judge.

Nelly, is very much a working hound though and will take part in her first offical tracking tests held in Norway in June. We here at Deertrackers wish her all the success!

On the 12th of May our friend Neville Black and Philip Quin came to visit for a few days stalking, Neville bought along his bitch 'Heidi' (Deertrackers Una) for us to see, which is the first time since she was eight weeks of age. She is a good looking bitch and has a really good home where she is much loved and gets plenty of work. This visit would be an introduction to Roe for Heidi as back home she hunts Sika and Red deer. Heidi has successfully tracked wounded /fallen beasts in Ireland in all conditions tracking one particular beast for 50 minutes through snow and ice, and another that was shot the previous day at 5pm and she tracked and found the beast 11am the following day. Heidis longest track to date has been a distance of over 1 mile.

Back to Gloucestershire, we divided in to two groups with Steve and his hound ‘Monty’ (Deertrackers Tackler) taking Philip, leaving Neville and Heidi to come with me. I’m glad to say that their trip was successful with both Neville and Philip having multiple successes.

Agility - Success for Bodi

Bodi has had a good start the year with agility after an injury around Christmas, gaining good placing at shows she has competed at so far this year.

On Saturday 23rd April Bodi was entered at Bretford Easter Egg-ility Show held at Solihull Riding Club in the West Midlands. Bodi had a successful day, placing 5th in the combined 1-3 jumping and winning both the Grade 2 Jumping and Agility. This win now means she moves up to Grade 3 from the middle of May.

GHDA Introduction to German Hunt Tests

Deertrackers attended the first German Hunting Dog Association Introduction to German hunt testing meet held in Oxfordshire on Sunday 11th April 2010.

The day gave young HPR's an insight to the VJP style test, in which they completed tasks involved nose, search, co-operation, 150m drag on a rabbit, water search and retrieve of a duck or pheasent and gun steadiness on while the dog was working onland and in water.

Dogs taking part included 4 x Deutsch Langhaar, 2 x Weimaraner, 2 x Deutsch Kurzhaar, 1 x Grosse Münsterländer and 1 x Rövidszörü Magyar Vizsla

Deertrackers were involved in setting the drag track of the rabbit and also demonstrating schweisshund with one of our Bayerischer Gebirgsschweisshund.

Freya was put forward to demonstrate the schweisshund element. She completed the track, which was aged 5 hours old and approx. 150 yards through a dense copse which also had the added distraction of a pheasent pen in the centre. While she did hesitate a bit due to stinging nettles at the start, she completed the track and demonstrated her reporting (baying) ability at the end.

We also gave the dogs opportunity to have a go at retrieving a fox as this is something required in the higher levels of the JGHV tests for the HPR types.

Crufts

Bavarian Mountain Hounds were present in the Discover Dogs area throughout the four days that Crufts dog show was held.

A total of 7 Bavarians were on the stand over the duration and all to be applauded for their behaviour in what can be a stressful environment. BMH present were: Mintaka, Freya, Reggie, Bruno, Vanda, Eddy and Sprite.

On the whole, the breed received a lot of interest from the general public, with a number of people visiting the stand to meet the hounds from as far and wide as USA, Australia and New Zealand as well as our closer neighbours from Europe.

The final day of the show however, was not positive in regards to the Kennel Club. We arrived at the show in the morning of the final day to find that the majority of our display photos of the hounds working had been stolen by the Kennel Club. It took 7 hours before we were able to speak to a KC Official - Bill Lambert (KC Health and Breeder Services Manager) who claimed that they had received ONE complaint and the photos had been deemed offensive to the public. Bill Lambert went on to liken the photos of our hounds working to the Bull Terriers displaying photos of dog fighting.

This was Bodi's first agility show of the year and 1st time jumping at full height (24") since her back injury in December.
We did not compete in the agility class but had an unexpected 1st place win in the Combined 1-2 Jumping.

An early morning stalk saw us dispatching a mature roe doe. After the shot, she travelled approximately 200yards across pastureland before dropping. We put Reggie onto the track that it took and let him track on until he found the beast.

The end of January saw Freya going out on her first outing to locate a shot deer. The beast selected and dispatched was a mature roe doe. We then walked up to within 20 yards of ground zero where at this point Freyas tracking collar was placed and line attached. We examined the area for shot signs, called Freya to the area and encouraged to track on to find the beast. There was plenty of live deer scent in the vacinity aswell, but the beast was soon located.

A Night at the Chicken Farm

After having a call about foxes causing untold damage, a successful nights lamping resulted with Wallace being called upon to subdue a wounded fox. Some good shooting by Robert ended with a total of 4 foxes being dispatched and one happy farmer.

Fox Training

Aswell as deer, we occasionally get called out to dispatch problematic foxes. Just before the start of the cold spell at the beginning of December, we had a call about 2-3 foxes that were gaining entry into a pen at a free-range chicken farm and helping themselves to an easy meal just before last light.
The following day we made our way to the farm at about 3.30pm and sat hidden from view close the the pen but with a good scope of the land around. As the light was fading, a shadow made its way down swiftly from some woodland at the top of farm. The fox moved towards some buildings and sat down to watch the chickens about 100 yards from us, making it an unsafe shot. After a moment the fox skirted back up the edge of the pen and entered under a gate. Running, the fox picked off a chicken and stopped approximately 50 yards from us. The shot was made and the fox dropped to the ground. The chicken that the fox had picked, managed to free and right itself and walk off seconds later. Due to the location that the fox had dropped and within sight, the dogs were not needed, so the body was removed to be used for training the following day.

Bodi - Small Munsterlander - the fox was used for assess her behaviour at a carcass. In the VGP JGHV tests the breed would expected to retrieve a fox to hand and retrieve a fox over an obstacle. Bodi's naturnal reaction was to bay at the fox, however with encouragement she did begin to attempt to pick it up.

Freya and Reggie - Bavarians - the fox was used to create a drag trail of approximately 400 yards down. The track ran down the edge of one field with a 90 degree turn across a farm track, through a deer run in a hedge row then another 90 degree turn to run up the edge of the field on the opposite sound of the track. The aim of the track was to see if the pups would go and follow the track without sticking close to the handler and to encourage baying behaviour at the body at the end of the track. The pups were released together and picked up the track easily and pursued it confidently and enthusiastically. They picked up the turns and located the fox without issue. A bit cautious at first, with a little encouragement Reggie began baying at the animal, Freya took a bit more encouragement, however she followed suit and began baying.

BMHS Natural Aptitude Test 21/11/10

Sunday November 21st 2010, saw the completion of the 3rd BMHS Training Day and Natural Aptitude Test held at Hartpury College, Gloucestershire.
8 hounds were entered into the test:-

3 x German Shorthaired Pointers
2 x Bavarian Mountain Hounds
2 x Basset Fauve de Bretagne
1 x Rhodesian Ridgeback.

The day started at 9.45am where a seminar on blood tracking was undertaken. Handlers were then moved outside for a demonstration of laying a blood trail for training. Handlers then seperated into pairs to practice laying a track and to give their hounds a chance to practice.
The afternoon saw the handlers and dogs split into two groups to complete the Aptitude Tracks which were located in mixed woodland.

All hounds entered, completed the tracks and gained their BMHS NA Tracking Test Pass.

A good day was had by all. Congratulations and Well Done to all the Handlers and Hounds for passing and those involved in making the day possible.

Tracking Practice

Having a day when we weren't running around doing something away from home with the dogs, it seemed the ideal opportunity to do some tracking practice with a couple of the dogs.

Weather conditions were fairly good after a fair bit of rain on previous days. The location of the tracks was a relatively steep, mature wooded hillside which is active with deer, badger, fox and rabbit.

The first track to be laid was for Bodi. On discovering a rather large badger set network on the laying of her track, it was decided to cut the length. Bodi can be easily distracted by other scents, so tracking through the set network would provide enough of a challenge for her.

The second track to be laid was for Freya to try. Freya had only previously done 2 short 30-40 yard tracks in areas with little distraction. Freyas track was in a less dense area than Bodi's track and ended up crossing a small badger set and numerous tracks made by various wildlife.

Both tracks were probably in the region of 80-100 yards and were each laid with 250ml of diluted blood with a roe buck head left at the end of the track.

Bodi worked her track enthusiastically and reached the end without too much bother. She did come off the track at one point, but was called back and she soon picked up and carriend on. An area that needs work is her speed...she covers ground too quick leading to her loosing the track.

Freya worked her track methodically with decent pace overall. This was only her third time at tracking and only 2nd time in woodland on her own. She was a bit unsure of some of the surroundings, however she worked her track and if she went off-line, came back and corrected herself. She found the finish and with encouragement gave tongue.

Bodis First Buck

After an unsuccessful first outing stalking with Bodi accompanying us, the second outing proved more fruitful. We arrived at our destination at approx. 1930 hrs. After negotiating various electric fences we made our way to the copse where we expected to see the roe deer. A buck and a doe were spotted and it was decided the buck was a cull animal. After a short stalk the buck was dispatched, the buck ran 50yds before collapsing. It was checked through the binoculars that the buck was dead before putting the tracking collar and line on Bodi. She tracked the beast as was expected and with very little encouragement began to bay the carcass.

Deertrackers at KCI Agility Festival

Friday 13th August saw the start of the Annual 3-day KC International Agility Festival, held at Kelmarsh Hall in Northamptonshire. The event is the largest of its kind in the country, with several thousand dogs competing from a variety of countries in 18 agility rings.

On Friday, Mintaka accompanied Bodi along to the show, where Bodi was competing in the Starters Cup along with a standard agility class. Out of a class of 122 dogs in the Starters Cup, Bodi made the top 30 dogs after an agility run and a jumping run. She also came 6th in the Grade 2 Agility.

On Saturday, both Wallace and Mintaka accompanied Bodi back to the show, when she competed in the Final of the Starters Cup. Unfortunately, Bodi took a wrong jump due to handler error and was eliminated, however it was a great achievement to get to the final. Bodi also had 1 agility and 2 jumping courses on the Saturday and went clear on all.

A good time was had by all, however the weather left a lot to be disired!

Deertrackers at the CLA Game Fair

Last weekend saw the annual CLA Fair take place at Ragley Hall in Warwickshire. Mintaka was present all three days representing the breed in the sporting dog pavillion and in the parade of sporting dogs held in the working dog ring each afternoon. She took it all in her stide but was grateful for the rest by the end of the weekend. Mintaka was joined by pal Bodi on the sunday, who became an honorary bavarian for the day.

A Bit of Stalking

In the middle of July, Neville came over to Deertrackers to collect his new puppy 'Meg'. While visiting, he managed to fit some time to learn about laying blood tracks for the training of the pup aswell as a successful trip out stalking with Mintaka.
